Planets in Vedic Astrology

29.03.2011 | Vedic astrology has its own style of making horoscope. Similarly it also has its own theory about planets. Every planet has its own significance, properties, friends and enemies. Depending upon them, one experiences their positive or negative effects in one’s life. Vedic astrology takes into account 9 planets viz. Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (Tail of dragon) and Ketu (Head of Dragon). By Dr. Abhijit Mhalank, MD

Out of these 9, the first seven are actual planets which one can see in the sky while the last two i.e. Rahu & Ketu are not actually planets but are two theoretical concepts from Vedic astrology. Let us get acquainted with these nine planets from Vedic astrology’s point of view.

Sun: Though the Sun is regarded as a star in modern astronomy, it is considered a planet in Vedic astrology. Since Sun is basically very glorious, it generally glorifies the effects of the horoscope house in which it is present. However it is also very hot and is capable of burning anything. So, at times it can also have some ill-effects in life. It is mainly responsible for the health of the individual. If the Sun is present in the 1st house of horoscope, then the persons enjoys good health in life. When present in 6th house of horoscope, it destroys person’s enemies and diseases. However in 7th house, it causes conflicts between the person and spouse (or life partner). The Sun represents father in the horoscope. If a person has served and respected his father well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of Sun in the present birth. When Sun is together with Ketu or Rahu, it gives negative effects. According to Vedic astrology, the Sun owns the zodiac Leo, is particularly powerful in zodiac Aries and is weak in zodiac Libra.

Moon: Though moon is a satellite of earth and not an independent planet according to modern astronomy, Vedic astrology considers it a planet. It is a very pleasant and cooling planet and offers the person peace, generosity, spiritual, emotional and loving nature. The moon represents mother in the horoscope. If a person has served and respected his mother well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of moon in the present birth. When moon is together with Ketu or Rahu, it gives negative effects. Moon is also responsible for mind of the individual. Strong moon in horoscope indicates that the person has healthy, optimistic, confident mind and strong willpower, while weak moon indicates that the person’s mind is unhealthy, depressed and devoid of confidence and his willpower is weak. Moon own the zodiac Cancer, is strong in zodiac Taurus while weak in zodiac Scorpion.

Mars: Like Sun, mars is also very strong and hot. Persons dominated by mars usually are highly energetic but also of hot temper. Mars can also cause heat-related problems, liver diseases, bleeding problems, excessive menstruation, burning sensations, ophthalmic diseases and high blood pressure to the person. It represents siblings in the horoscope. If a person has served and respected his siblings well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of mars in the present birth. When mars is together with Rahu or saturn, it may give negative effects. When in 1st house of horoscope, mars makes the person energetic, confident but of hot temper. If present in 2nd house, person’s language is always sharp, aggressive and sometimes even bitter. In 7th house mars may cause serious conflicts between life partners. If present in 3rd house, mars makes the person very courageous and gives high position in police or armed forces. Mars owns zodiacs Aries and Scorpion, is particularly strong in Capricorn and weak in Gemini and Cancer.

Mercury: Unlike mars, Mercury is supposed to be a mild planet. It is responsible for wealth, intelligence level, oratorical & writing skills, skin and skin diseases. Powerful mercury in 11th house of horoscope offers good wealth, in 10th house high intelligence and in 3rd house fine oratorical or writing skills. If present in 6th or 12th house, it causes skin diseases. However when it is together with another planet, it doesn’t exhibit his own effects but takes up the properties of accompanying planets. Mercury owns zodiacs Gemini and Virgo (in which it also quite strong) and is weak in Pisces.

Jupiter: Jupiter is a very important planet, as it is responsible for knowledge, higher education, memory, teaching skills, research abilities, reputation, devotion and spiritual growth. However it can also cause health problems like obesity and diabetes. It represents teachers, spiritual masters and God in the horoscope. If a person has served and respected his teachers, spiritual masters and God well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of Jupiter in the present birth. It is supposed to be more powerful in 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th houses of horoscope than in the other remaining houses. Jupiter owns zodiacs Sagittarius and Pisces, is very strong in Cancer and weak in Capricorn. Strong Jupiter in a favourable house of horoscope can offer deep knowledge, bright success in higher education, excellent memory, fine teaching skills & research abilities, high reputation, devotional and spiritual attitude to the person.

Venus: All over the world Venus is regarded as planet of beauty, fame, arts, sexuality, cosmetics, ornaments, clothing, publicity and popularity. Powerful Venus indeed offers the person all these things. However it can also cause sexual and urinary diseases. It represents life partner in the horoscope. If a person has served and respected his life partner well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of Venus in the present birth. Venus is considered to be weak in Virgo or when it is together with Sun. It owns zodiacs Taurus and Libra and is particularly strong in Pisces.

Saturn: Vedic astrology considers Saturn to be the most powerful planet, since it has the capacity to overshadow the effects of all other planets. If Saturn is running unfavourable, the person generally does not receive positive effects of any other planet. Saturn is supposed to be extremely strict, spiritual and ethical planet who totally detests corruption, deceitfulness, dishonesty, insincerity and unethical activities. So it always supports those who are ethical, sincere, honest and dutiful but gives harsh punishments to those who are dishonest, insincere, undutiful and corrupt. Saturn is supposed to be the God of workers and underground minerals. It usually increases Vata dosh in body and mind of the individual and can cause Vata disorders. Saturn represents servants and colleagues in the horoscope. If a person has treated and respected his servants and colleagues well in the previous birth, then he receives positive effects of Saturn in the present birth. Saturn is supposed to be positive in 3rd, 6th and 11th houses of horoscope and negative in remaining all houses. It is particularly stressful in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 12th houses. It owns Capricorn and Aquarius zodiacs, is particularly strong in Libra and weak in Aries.

These seven planets are actually visible in the sky. But Rahu & Ketu are fictious planets mentioned in Vedic astrology. Earth revolves around Sun in its orbit while the moon revolves around the earth in its own orbit. These two orbits cross each other in two different points which lies in 180°C from each other. These two points are called Rahu & Ketu. It is believed that in the horoscope they give information about the positive and negative deeds committed by the person in previous birth. If a person has committed many serious crimes and sins in his previous birth, then Rahu and Katu are negative in his horoscope and cause him lot of harm. But if the person has committed more positive deeds in his previous life, then they are positive in his horoscope and do not cause any harm. Presence of Rahu with moon and presence of Ketu with Sun in the horoscope are supposed to be very harmful. They do not own any zodiac in Vedic astrology. Rahu is supposed to be particularly positive in Gemini while Ketu is supposed to be positive in Sagittarius.

These planets also share certain relationships with each other. Each planets has friends as well as enemies. When two friendly planets are together, effects are positive while when rival planets are together effects are negative. Following table summarizes their relationships with each other.
